Storm runoff and creek flooding in Santa Rosa

Local, sourced information for Santa Rosa homeowners, and a fast way to reach a licensed provider.

Santa Rosa · Local guide · Updated October 18, 2026

Santa Rosa doesn't have a big river through town, but it has creeks, storm drains, hillsides and burn areas. In heavy rain, water arrives fast.

The city's warnings

The City of Santa Rosa's Rain Ready page says flash flooding and debris flows become more likely during intense rainfall. It recommends identifying vulnerable areas on your property, using erosion control such as wattles and rock bags, clearing fire-related debris from creeks and drainages, and having an evacuation plan.

Burn areas

The 2017 Tubbs Fire destroyed 5,636 structures across Napa and Sonoma counties (CAL FIRE), with heavy losses in Coffey Park and Fountaingrove (Press Democrat). The 2020 Glass Fire destroyed homes in Santa Rosa's Skyhawk neighborhood (NBC Bay Area). Rebuilt neighborhoods next to burned slopes should pay extra attention to drainage.
